Meet Dr. Jonathan W. Draney
Dr. Jonathan W. Draney, DDS, MS, is a Utah native who graduated from Utah State University before moving to Columbus, Ohio to pursue his DDS from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry, where he further attained a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and Master of Science.
Jonathan decided to specialize in pediatric dentistry after listening to his sister talk about her children’s positive experience at a dentist‘s office. “She couldn’t stop talking about how awesome the dentist was,” Draney recalls. “I decided then and there that I wanted to be a pediatric dentist and work with children myself.”
Dr. Draney chose Lancaster, OH as the site for his new practice for several reasons. “I wanted to find a smaller town that I could call home, where I could raise my family and we could be part of the community,” he says. “I feel like I can really make a difference for the children in this area. It‘s important for kids to have a dentist trained in pediatrics, who can relate to them and make each visit amazing, easy and fun.”
Dr. Draney is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the Ohio Dental Association. He has served as a Student Interviewer for the OSU College of Dentistry Admissions, as Group Leader for the OSU College of Dentistry Comprehensive Care Clinic, and also participated in a dental service mission to the Dominican Republic. Dr. Draney is the recipient of many awards and honors, is committed to continuing education, and is looking forward to having his practice be a benefit to the community.
When he’s not on his dentist’s stool, Dr. Draney enjoys spending time with his wife and five children outside, grilling and gardening at home. An Eagle Scout, Dr. Draney is an avid outdoorsman with a passion for camping, rappelling, and hiking, as well as golf, football and paint-balling. He also devotes time to photography, wood and metal working, carpentry, being the household’s handyman and taking his son, Tyler, to Buckeye games.
Meet Dr. Marlena Shah
Marlena Shah, DDS, MS, is a transplant from Sterling, Michigan, to her current home in Columbus, Ohio. She graduated from University of Detroit Mercy with a Bachelors in Biology and a Doctorate of Dental Surgery before moving to Ohio to pursue her Pediatric Dentistry residency at Ohio State University, where she achieved her Master of Science degree.
Marlena chose Pediatric Dentistry because she had always worked with children (she has a background of teaching and tutoring) and enjoys seeing the world through a child’s perspective. She remembers visiting the dentist with her siblings as a child, brushing her teeth before her appointment to make a good impression. The dentist in turn made an impression on her: “I was struck by how my dentist would remember my name and things about my family without even consulting my chart!”
"I chose to join Lancaster Pediatric Dentistry because the practice is amazing, the community is tightly knit, and the environment is all about the kids," says Dr. Shah. "Everyone is friendly – from the patients to the staff."
Dr. Shah is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association and the Ohio Dental Association. She still has close ties to OSU, participating in the Give Kids a Smile program and teaching at OSU and the Nationwide Children’s Hospital. She has volunteered for a dental mission trip to Guatemala, and participated in Special Smile for Special Olympics. She also held the coveted position of Chief Resident for the Class of 2014 at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
When she’s not introducing children to oral health and making them feel comfortable in her world of pediatric dentistry, Marlena spends time with her new husband, (also a dentist – they met in dental school), and uses time off to travel back to visit extended family in Michigan. She enjoys crafts, cooking and baking, and loves to travel and hike outdoors.
